A piston ring is a critical component of an internal combustion engine. It is a split ring that fits into grooves on the outer circumference of the piston. The primary function of piston rings is to provide a seal between the piston and the cylinder wall, preventing the combustion gases from leaking into the crankcase and ensuring efficient engine operation.
There are typically three rings per piston, known as the compression rings, located near the top of the piston, and one oil control ring, located near the bottom. The compression rings are responsible for sealing the combustion chamber, while the oil control ring helps regulate the amount of oil that reaches the combustion chamber and prevents excessive oil consumption.
